Walk or roll in the heat

Early October afternoons in Las Vegas can still pass 90°F. Whether you walk, use a wheelchair or walker, or push a stroller, a little planning makes the trip to the bus stop cooler and safer.

  1. Step 1: Pick a cooler time and bring water

When you can, make your trip in the morning or after 5 pm. Bring water for everyone in your group, and wear a hat and light-colored clothes.

Some medicines make it harder for your body to handle heat. If you take any medicine, ask your pharmacist.

Feeling dizzy or sick? Stop somewhere cool and drink water before you go any further.

  2. Step 2: Stay on the shady side and plan places to rest

Buildings, walls and trees cast shade away from the sun. On a north-south street, that puts shade on the east sidewalk in the morning and on the west sidewalk in the afternoon. On an east-west street, the south side usually has more shade all day.

Checking a route ahead of time? A map app's satellite view shows dark green patches of trees along the sidewalk.

Plan places to cool down along the way: bus shelters, libraries, community centers, and covered walkways at shopping centers. If part of your trip has no shade for a long stretch, a bus may be able to carry you past it.

Morning Morning: the east sidewalk is shaded.
Afternoon Afternoon: the west sidewalk is shaded.
  3. Step 3: Watch for hot surfaces

Metal and dark surfaces left in the sun get hot enough to burn: wheelchair handrims and seats, stroller handles, seats and buckles, and metal benches at bus stops.

Gloves help with hot handrims. A light-colored cloth over a seat left in the sun keeps it cooler. Touch a stroller seat or buckle with the back of your hand before a child sits down.

Hot pavement can burn a service animal's or pet's paws, too.
